Synopsis: Benj Nielsen, a freshman who is both eager and anxious to enter high school, is the main character of the story. Alongside Connor, Eddie, Danah “Koosh” Koushani and Benj navigates the perilous seas of puberty. The adult characters in the movie are mainly underutilized, especially Cannavale’s chemistry teacher and Kaitlin Olson’s role as Benj’s domineering mother. In particular, Olson is mishandled despite her demonstrated comic ability. Her portrayal seems like a lost chance to bring some genuinely funny, realistic moments into the film. Rather, the adults contribute very little to the main plot and are essentially used as background objects.
