Synopsis: The protagonist, J.D., is a law student attempting to secure summer work at a company in order to pay for Yale the following year. Only a few days before his interview, his mother overdoses on heroin. Is he going to be able to travel to Ohio, resolve it, and return to Connecticut in time? Or will all the hysterics, acid-washed denim, scrunchies, and hyperventilating people that haunt his flashbacks permanently sidetrack him? Though they don’t show us much, Howard’s characters teach us a great deal. According to J.D., his mother is the most intelligent person he has ever encountered.
