Synopsis: There is some inventiveness in “Gladiator II” during the main title sequence. It creates animation that resembles paintings from parts of the original film. Reminding viewers of earlier, much earlier times is beneficial. Shortly after, the film jumps ahead to the Roman conquest of North Africa, skipping beyond Lucius’s marriage to his bride. This sets off a fierce conflict that murders the leader’s loved one and annihilates the populace. Scott tackles the first of many battle scenes, reusing scenes of carnage and devastation from several of his earlier projects. Scott is primarily concerned with causing mayhem, while the movie attempts to portray Lucius as a tortured man seeking retribution.
