Synopsis: “The Amazing Maurice,” an animated film based on the Terry Pratchett novel and featuring the lead voice cast of Hugh Laurie and Emilia Clarke, has been sold in several major territories. Global Screens will present the film as its market premiere at Cannes.
The film is a riot of silliness from start to finish, with top dollar actors nailing it well. The setting is of old bubonic times, where Maurice is a clever Ginger Tom, and the brains behind a Pied Piper racket. He is working in collusion with a pack of rats and a scruffy boy named Keith. Of the supporting cast, David Tennant is wonderful as the mice’s spiritual mentor, Dangerous Beans, an aging Krusty in a holey jumper. On a specific operation, Maurice sends in rats, which overrun a village, fueling fears of a plague. Then Keith comes in playing a flute pretending to be the piper of yore. Voila, the rats leave and the locals pay. It’s a nice little earner, but Maurice and the gang get trapped in a village called Furry Bottom.
